Lakewood, WA – Today, U.S. Representative Marilyn Strickland announced $1,500,000 in federal funding for the Town of Steilacoom and partners to support the Garrison Springs Creek Restoration Project.

“Funding the Garrison Springs Creek Restoration project will improve the water quality of some runoff that flows directly into the Puget Sound,” said Rep. Strickland. “While helping restore Puget Sound, this project also provides better habitat for local wildlife, gives the community direct access to South Sound parks and nature.”

“The Garrison Springs restoration project corrects a common mistake made a century ago, that is diverting a salmon bearing creek would not have a severe environmental impact. Today we have a social obligation and an opportunity to fully restore this habitat and also have a park for all to enjoy,” said Town of Steilacoom Mayor Dick Muri.

Garrison Springs Restoration will help improve water quality runoff into the Puget Sound while providing much-needed habitat for both aquatic and terrestrial wildlife. The full Garrison Springs Restoration Project is a larger effort to convert former industrial lands into a local asset with direct access to nature, a community park, housing, bike and pedestrian connections, and water access.

This award is one of the 14 FY23 Community Project Funding (CPF) grants Congresswoman Strickland secured. Read more about these projects here: https://strickland.house.gov/media/press-releases/strickland-secures-19-million-south-sound
