As we start the new year, I wanted to update you on my work over the past month, and what I have been doing to serve you in the other Washington. From launching the 2024 Valentines for Veterans and First Responders drive, to supporting military firefighters impacted by PFAS, I have been listening to your concerns and fighting to deliver on the issues you care about.
Keeping It Local
U.S. Representative Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) announced the launch of the annual Valentines for Veterans and First Responders drive. Residents, schools, and organizations are invited to make handmade valentine’s cards and leave them at various drop boxes across the district, starting on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, through Tuesday, February 6, 2024. Once received, valentines will be distributed to veterans and first responders living and working across Washington’s 10th Congressional District.
Today, U.S. Representative Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) announced her first Constituent Spotlight of 2024, Dr. Laurie Dent. With more than 20 years of public education experience under her belt, Dr. Dent currently serves as the Superintendent of the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District.

More from the South Sound
- Secured nearly $42 million for new Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure in Washington state, including $12 million in the South Sound for the Northwest Seaport Alliance.
- Broke ground on Patsy Surh Place in Tacoma, which will bring 77 units of much-needed low-income senior housing to the Lincoln District- with a focus on AAPI elders.
- Visited Emergency Food Network in Lakewood to see their progress on expanding their food distribution warehouse. I am proud to have secured $1.5 million in federal funding to support this project.
Updates from the Other Washington
At the start of Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, U.S. Representative Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) introduced a bipartisan bill that establishes a compensation fund for military firefighters exposed to PFAS, alongside U.S. Representative Bill Posey (R-FL).
As the co-lead of the Grid Innovation Caucus, U.S. Representative Marilyn Strickland urged the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), to streamline the application process and extend the deadline on proposal submissions for the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Program.
Other Legislative Work
- Recognized the historic Affordable Care Act, which has now allowed a record-breaking 20 million Americans to enroll in much-needed health care coverage.
- Met with South Sound Tribal leaders to discuss how the incoming Billy Frank Jr. statue will be a critical addition to the U.S. Capitol and highlight the importance of Tribes in our nation.
- Following the Texas court ruling against emergency abortions, and as a leader in the Pro-Choice caucus, continued to protect access to reproductive freedom across the country.
