Strickland Hosts Plaskett for Forum on Black Innovation and Artificial Intelligence

Lakewood, WA – Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) welcomed delegate to the U.S House of Representatives from the U.S Virgin Islands, and Congressional Caucus on Black Innovation (CCBI) Co-Chair, Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett.

The pair hosted a series of panels to discuss the state of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry and how best to support Black innovation and entrepreneurs at the federal level. They then toured the University of Washington (UW) Paul G. Allen Center.

“Washington state is a leader in the AI industry,” said Strickland. “Thank you to the CCBI, Rep. Plaskett, and our guest speakers for a day of panels and discussion about the importance of supporting Black innovation and entrepreneurship in the growing field of AI.”

Panel I: Policy & AI Ecosystem

Strickland, CCBI Co-Chair, moderated a panel with several industry leaders to discuss federal AI policy. Panelists talked about how to further support Washington as an AI leader and how to ensure equitable access to AI startup opportunities for entrepreneurs of color.

Panel II: Capital & Community Catalyst: Investing in Inclusive Growth

Plaskett, moderated another panel and led discussions around supporting minority entrepreneurs in the AI industry. Panelists talked more about fostering an inclusive future for AI, that prioritizes equity and capital as the sector grows.

University of Washington Paul G. Allen Center Tour

Following the panels, the lawmakers toured the UW Paul G. Allen Center to see firsthand local AI and tech innovation. Demonstrations from students showcased their work on smartphones and wearables that will improve health screenings.

As Co-Chairs of the CCBI, Plaskett and Strickland both remain committed to supporting the AI industry at the federal level, while ensuring Black and minority innovators and entrepreneurs receive the capital needed to thrive.
