Lacey, WA – Last month, U.S. Representative Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) celebrated several federal investments in community projects across the South Sound.

“Federal funding helps our neighborhoods thrive and improve the quality of life in the South Sound,” said Strickland. “I’m pleased to secure funding for these projects to build more affordable housing, improve safety for transit riders, and deliver more clean water to our communities.”

Bringing Indoor Renovations to Sprinker Community Recreation Center

Strickland secured an additional $1,000,000 in federal funding for renovations inside the Sprinker Community Recreation Center. This project focuses on making long-overdue improvements to the interior of the current Recreation Center and will help meet the accessibility and safety needs of the community.

Adding Mixed Income Housing for Olympia

The 3900 Boulevard Project, operated by the South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity, increases the availability of affordable housing in Olympia for low- and moderate-income families. In support of this effort, Strickland secured $500,000 in federal funding that is making it possible for 112 first-time homeowners to purchase an affordable home.

Maintaining Safe, Affordable Housing for Seniors

Underscoring her commitment to community elders and keeping them safely housed, Strickland secured $500,000 for Homes First’s O’Farrell Senior Co-Housing property in Olympia. This federal funding is renovating and constructing new housing units that will serve both single seniors and couples.

Revitalizing Pierce Transit Bus Shelters

Increasing safe and accessible public transit is a crucial component to connecting South Sound communities. Strickland joined Pierce Transit in unveiling one of many new bus shelters supported by $2,500,000 that she secured. The new shelters are redesigned to protect against vandalism and are equipped with stronger, less breakable glass panels.

Delivering Clean Water for Lakewood

Strickland protected South Sound families by delivering over $950,000 for the Lakewood Water District’s fight against PFAS. PFAS are toxic chemicals that can result in serious, lifelong related health issues. This federal funding is allowing construction of two new wells aimed at bolstering local water supplies that have been depleted due to contamination. This funding is delivering clean water to thousands of Lakewood Water District residents, including military and economically disadvantaged families.

For federal fiscal year 2024, Strickland secured over $13 million for South Sound communities. This federal funding is creating local jobs, improving public safety, enhancing several roads and water infrastructure projects, addressing hunger, expanding access to public transit, and building more affordable housing.
