Lakewood, WA – Today, Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) announced over $960,000 in federal funding for Tacoma Police Department’s new Community Safety Officer program. Five months into the alternative response strategy, the Community Safety Officer program has helped add capacity to better serve Tacoma residents and businesses and has increased public safety.

“To improve public safety, we must support local law enforcement,” said Strickland. “Police departments play a crucial role in keeping the South Sound safe, and additional resources help them fulfill their mission.”

The City of Tacoma, on behalf of the Tacoma Police Department, sought assistance regarding alternative responses to public safety from the Honorable Marilyn Strickland,” said Tacoma Police Chief Avery L. Moore. “Her efforts delivered much-needed funding to launch the Community Safety Officer Program. This program will help fulfill community needs, support commission officers in the field, and strengthen our public relations.”

This project funding allowed the Tacoma Police Department to create and staff its new community safety officer program to address non-urgent, non-violent public safety needs.

This award is one of the 14 FY24 Community Project Funding (CPF) grants Congresswoman Strickland secured. Read more about these projects here: https://strickland.house.gov/media/press-releases/strickland-secures-over-13-million-south-sound
