Lakewood, WA – Today, Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) announced over $950,000 in federal funding for the Lakewood Water District.

“All communities deserve access to clean water. It’s that simple,” said Strickland. “Bringing this federal funding to Lakewood provides thousands of families with a basic – yet critical – necessity.”

“Over the next five years, Lakewood Water District will have to spend tens of millions of dollars addressing PFAS pollution in drinking water caused by others, creating a significant cost burden to our customers,” said Marshall Meyer, the Lakewood Water District General Manager. “The nearly one million dollars of funding from Congresswoman Strickland reduces the financial impact to our customers of a project that replaces a contaminated well. We want to extend our sincere appreciation to Congresswoman Strickland for her help to the District in its mission of serving healthy communities through responsible water practices.”

This funding will construct two new wells aimed at bolstering local water supplies that have been depleted due to PFAS contamination, a toxic chemical that results in several lifelong related health issues. Wells impacted by PFAS contamination particularly affect thousands of civilian and military families and have also impacted economically disadvantaged communities that the Lakewood Water District serves.

This award is one of the 14 FY24 Community Project Funding (CPF) grants Congresswoman Strickland secured. Read more about these projects here: https://strickland.house.gov/media/press-releases/strickland-secures-over-13-million-south-sound
