Lakewood, WA  Today, Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) announced $500,000 in federal funding for the Tacoma-Pierce County Habitat for Humanity.

“The cost of housing continues to rise here in the South Sound,” said Strickland. “Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home. This project will provide more opportunities to do just that.”

“Congresswoman Strickland’s investment in keeping entry-level homeownership accessible for Pierce County residents is invaluable,” said Sherrana Kildun, Chief Philanthropy Officer for Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity. “In our 39-year history, this is the busiest Tacoma Habitat has ever been. We’re building in three neighborhoods, and are in the process of buying and renovating 80 single-family homes, which is where these federal dollars will be invested. Preserving existing units and keeping them affordable for first-time homebuyers is exactly what the community needs. The median cost of a Pierce County home these days is well over a half million dollars, which prices too many of our neighbors out of homeownership altogether. Tacoma Habitat is grateful to Congresswoman Strickland for leaning into this special project and helping us add 80 income-qualified, first-time homeowners to the community.”

This project is purchasing and rehabilitating 80 public housing units previously owned by the Tacoma Housing Authority. This will preserve the affordability of these units, satisfying the critical need for affordable housing across the region.

This award is one of the 14 FY24 Community Project Funding (CPF) grants Congresswoman Strickland secured. Read more about these projects here.
