Lakewood, WA – Today, Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) announced $500,000 in federal funding for the City of University Place to support the Chambers Bay Access Project.
“This federal funding will improve a critical local intersection,” said Strickland “Addressing access will help the flow of traffic and better connect University Place to the Town of Steilacoom and the rest of the South Sound.”
“The intersection at 64th Street West and Chambers Creek Road is a critical T-intersection linking the City of University Place, the Town of Steilacoom, and key southern destinations such as Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the City of DuPont, and the Greater Olympia Region. This intersection faces congestion challenges and poses pedestrian, bicyclist, and vehicular traffic concerns. Federal funding is essential to reconfigure this intersection, addressing public safety concerns, ensuring resilient infrastructure, and promoting equitable transportation access. Thanks to the efforts of Congresswoman Strickland, the City is one step closer to improving this vital intersection,” said University Place Mayor, Javier H. Figueroa.
The project will reconfigure the intersection of 64th Street West and Chambers Creek Road from a 3-leg stop-controlled intersection to a roundabout, improve traffic flow and motorists’ sight distance, and install accessible crosswalks.
This award is one of the 14 FY24 Community Project Funding (CPF) grants Congresswoman Strickland secured. Read more about these projects here: https://strickland.house.gov/media/south-sound-updates/strickland-secures-1-million-lakewood-affordable-housing-project
