Each year, Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) nominates area-eligible students and residents to the U.S. Service Academies. This multi-step, multi-month application and interview process ensures that the 10th Congressional District is putting forth quality candidates to serve our country.
To help those interested in attending the U.S. Service Academies, the Office of Congresswoman Strickland hosted two U.S. Service Academy Nights this week. Over 100 students from the 10th Congressional District had the opportunity to connect with Field Representatives from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. In addition, 6 students who received nominations from Congresswoman Strickland after attending last year’s event were awarded a Certificate of Congressional Recognition for their prestigious achievement.
This annual informational event is recommended for all interested high school and middle school students residing in Washington State’s 10th Congressional District.
“One of the greatest honors I perform as a Member of Congress is nominating South Sound residents for attendance at our nation’s prestigious service academies,” said U.S. Rep. Strickland. “As the daughter of a veteran and a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I understand the importance of this process and want to ensure that all interested students are well-positioned to gain entrance to these institutions.”
The four service academies for which the Congresswoman can make nominations are:
- The US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.
- The US Military Academy in West Point, NY.
- The US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY.
- The US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.
The US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, does not require a nomination; however, the Congresswoman can write a letter of recommendation upon request approval.
An applicant interested in a nomination to one of the Service Academies should contact their Member of Congress and both Senators.
To be considered for admission to a Service Academy, the candidate must meet the eligibility requirements, qualify medically, pass an aptitude test, and obtain a nomination from a source authorized by Congress.
