CONSTITUENT SPOTLIGHT: SASHA TAQʷŠƏBLU LAPOINTE

U.S. Representative Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) announced her November Constituent Spotlight, Sasha “taqʷšəblu” LaPointe. Sasha is an author and educator whose work shines a light on Native heritages found throughout the U.S.

“I am proud to have Sasha as my November Constituent of the Month,” said U.S. Rep Strickland. “Her work is vital to uplifting Native communities and culture throughout the country. Sasha’s dedication to her craft and community is part of what makes the South Sound such a special place.”

LaPointe enriches the South Sound community through her memoirs and poetry, drawing inspiration from her coastal heritage as well as her life in the city. She writes with a focus on trauma and resilience, and her topics range from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and sexual violence to the work her great grandmother did for the Lushootseed language revitalization and what it means to grow up mixed heritage.

Sasha teaches creative writing at the Native Pathways Program at Evergreen State College, and is a mentor for Seattle’s Youth Poet Laureate program. Her memoir Red Paint has received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews and Shelf Awareness.
