Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) released the following statement on the election of Speaker Mike Johnson:

“The House Republican conference has chosen to elevate one of the chief architects behind the effort to overturn the 2020 election as second in line to the Presidency, showing how mainstream the MAGA movement has become. Instead of standing up for the American people, the House GOP continues to bend to the extremist wings of their party that seek to undermine democracy and the very foundations of our nation.

Despite the radicalization of the Republican party, I will continue to prioritize delivering for my constituents in the 10th District of Washington and doing bipartisan work to uplift the families, seniors, servicemembers, and veterans that are depending on Congress to build a nation that is more just, more safe and more secure. I look forward to working with my Democratic colleagues to protect Social Security and Medicare, voting rights, and women’s reproductive rights from the agenda of an anti-democratic Speaker.”

U.S. Representative Marilyn Strickland serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. She is the Congressional Black Caucus whip, a member of the New Democrat Coalition, one of the first Korean-American women elected to Congress, and the first African-American elected to represent the Pacific Northwest at the federal level.
