Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (WA-10) released the following statement on the Inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States and Kamala Harris as our nation’s first female, Black, and Asian-American Vice President.

“Today, we turned a hopeful and historic new page in American history. What we experienced over the last four years wounded our nation, but with the Biden Administration, we can begin the process of healing, recovering, and rebuilding. The inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris represents the return of true and competent leadership to Washington, D.C., and with it, the opportunity to get our nation back on track.

“I cannot help but to reflect on the fact that today, Kamala Harris became the first female, Black, and Asian-American Vice President in our nation’s history. She will give voice to millions of people who have not felt represented at the highest levels of American government. As a woman of both Black and Asian descent who attended an Historically Black College and University (HBCU) as well, saying this moment was incredibly inspiring for me to witness firsthand does not do it justice.

“As we pause to celebrate this historic moment, we remain mindful of the 400,000 American people we’ve lost to COVID, and remain dedicated to the work ahead to defeat this virus. As we build back better, I look forward to working with the Biden-Harris Administration to save lives, mobilize vaccination and testing, deliver direct relief to those hardest hit, and support struggling communities. Together, we will build a stronger, and more equitable future for all of us.”
